BORDERLAND TREASURES FEATURES THE SOCORRO MISSION

Borderland Treasures with Natassia Paloma features the Socorro Mission established on October 13, 1680

SOCORRO, TEXAS – Check out this Borderland Treasures feature on our very own Socorro Mission established 341 years ago! What a beautiful treasure and a reminder of our community’s ties to the Piro and Tigua communities.

“The Socorro community was established on the southern banks of the Rio Grande River 341 years ago, on October 13, 1680, first with a makeshift church, then a permanent church that was completed by 1691”. Although destroyed and rebuilt several times due to devastating floods, the present church has been standing for 178 years.

Thank you to Preservation Texas and KTSM 9 News for continuing to cover our borderland treasures!
